A selection of prints made with the exhibition in Hay Castle in mind. Ice Cream, Home Rule and Books This Way were printed on the 1853 Columbian Press in the Castle. Some notes on the prints: 'Home Rule for Hay' was one of the placards held in the crowd when Hay declared itself independent in 1977, and 'Eat Hay Ice Cream' was one of its slogans (I removed the first part that read 'Balls to Wall's'). The 'Independent Kingdom' print has bronze banners and green buglers as respective nods to the Hay crown jewels and the independence flag. 'Puzzled' - there is, of course, no P.O.Box 42. Finally, 'Hay ist Dada'. In the first issue of Kurt Schwitters' Dada magazine in 1923, it was declared that 'Holland ist Dada', and I thought if Holland can be Dada, Hay certainly can, so devised this card in the style of the times. The typeface – Old Style Grotesque Condensed – dates from 1918 or thereabouts so is contemporaneous. I'm not going to admit to the time it took to get the placing of the dot to my satisfaction.
